Hong Kong’s first modern Central Asian restaurant will be coming to SoHo and serving beshbarmaq, a traditional horse meat dish to the region.

Opening in December, Yurt is bringing the flavours of the founding team – from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan – to Hong Kong, feeding the souls and stomachs of a growing Central Asian community in the city and foodies intrigued by the regional cuisines.

The centrepiece of the restaurant, beshbarmaq, is a national dish celebrated throughout Kazakhstan, primarily made with boiled meat, typically horse meat, dough, and onion sauce.

Yurt will offer both tasting menu and á-la-carte dining formats, allowing Hong Kong to experience the full extent of Central Asia’s flavours. When open next month, it will operate as a fully Halal restaurant.

“This commitment is fundamental to the restaurant’s identity, ensuring cultural authenticity while allowing the nuanced tea flavours and essential herbs of Central Asian drinking culture to remain the uncompromising focus,” read a statement from the team shared with Foodie.
